It does the job, and I'm glad to have a freestanding gate that is so wide, but overall I'm less impressed with the quality of the wood finishing and gate design than I thought I would have been for the price.
I have the 5 panel walk-through EZ gate in Cherry. The wood is stained Cherry, but is far too pink for my liking! It is pretty much a salmon color.
I have refinished many pieces of furniture and feel that I can make a correct assessment that although the wood is stained, there is no finish on the wood (i.e. no polyurethane or lacquer). But what bothers me more than the lack of finish is that the wood feels rough when you touch it. It absolutely, positively, was not sanded smooth enough.
As for the latching mechanism, it is simple and effective. it has a pin which drops down into the metal bar across the bottom of the walk-through gate frame to keep it latched. But it takes some finesse to get it into position so the pin will drop into the hole and I find that I have to use not just my hand on the top of the gate, but also my foot to guide the bottom of the gate into position so the pin will drop into the hole. and if you're walking through it several times a day, well that's just PLAIN annoying.

I BOUGHT 2 OF THESE LAST YEAR AND LOVED THEM. THIS MONTH I HAD TO ORDER 2 MORE BECAUSE I HAVE WIDE AREAS AND I WANTED TO KEEP MY DOGS OUT OF MY DINNING ROOM AS WELL AS LIVING ROOM. THE WOOD IS A LITTLE LIGHTER AND NOT SANDED VERY WELL, SO THEY DO NOT REALLY MATCH THE FIRST ONE. I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED AND THE BOXES ARE TOO HEAVY TO SEND BACK PLUS I NEED THEM NOW.
